Instructions
1
Heat the oven to 170°C (340°F) and line a 10x10cm square tin with baking paper, letting the edges overhang for easy lifting.
2
Melt the butter and chopped dark chocolate together in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water, stirring until smooth, then set aside to cool slightly.
3
Whisk the sugar into the melted chocolate mixture until glossy, then beat in the egg until fully incorporated.
4
Sift the flour, cocoa powder, cinnamon, black pepper and salt directly into the bowl, then fold gently until just combined and no dry streaks remain.
5
Stir in the orange zest and chopped walnuts, folding just enough to distribute evenly without overmixing.
6
Pour the batter into the prepared tin, spreading it level into the corners with a spatula.
7
Bake for 18-20 minutes, until the top is set with a slight crackle and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out with a few moist crumbs.
8
Cool in the tin on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before lifting out and slicing into 2 squares.
